Letters, relics and paintings amid walnut bookshelves give this place a unique atmosphere. The Keats and Shelley Museum at Piazza di Spagna is a tiny museum dedicated to the Romantic poets in the house where the young poet Keats died in 1821.Basilica of San Clemente with its 3 layers stacked one on top of the other is like a journey through time, from the 12th century church to the oldest level which is made up of an ancient Roman house, a place of worship dedicated to Mithras and an industrial building. Most of Rome's museums and sites with the exception of churches and the Vatican are closed to the public on Mondays, but here are a few ideas:

And simple as they sound those last few words never fail to bring childish, happy, satisfied smiles.Įach flap, in the shape of a crate, or a basket, or a box with breathing holes, conceals one of the animals and a little part of the animal is visible before the flap is lifted to allow guessing. They send various different animals, all of which prove unsuitable for one reason or another the elephant is too big, the lion too fierce, the giraffe too tall, the monkey too naughty. In case you hadn't guessed, it's about a letter to the zoo from a child who wants a pet. I sent him back.'"ĭear Zoo is one of those "lift the flap books". "What would you ask the zoo to send you?" It should be one of the first items on your shopping list and is at least as important as the nappies and the cot. Perfect for babies of a year upwards, it will probably last until they are four or five. It's simple, rhythmic, humorous and it has longevity. Summary: Dear Zoo is one of those must-have picture books. 6/12/2023 0 Comments I was here gayleMeg’s parents come off as distant and I get grief, but the fact that they did not go to the college themselves to pick up Meg’s things seemed odd.Ĭody’s actions throughout the book are off as well. The basic story line of this book is good and I think author Gayle Forman in on the right track with Cody discovering a side to her friend she didn’t know existed, however some things did not work for me in the story. Jorjeana Marie was an excellent narrator for this book, she held the right voice. This book deals with the hard subject of suicide and what happens after to those who are left behind. I enjoyed listening to I Was Here on audio. As Cody looks through Meg’s laptop she finds things that may be clues, including an encrypted file in the recycle bin that may hold more that Cody bargained for. What signs did she miss? When Cody goes to Meg’s college to collect her things she learns a lot more about the girl she thought she knew. Then Cody is shocked when an email arrives from Meg telling Cody that by the time she read the message, it is already too late.Ĭody is confused by her friends suicide. They still communicated by email and phone calls but life gets busy… and the calls are more infrequent… Considered inseparable all through their school years the girls were constantly together until Meg receives a full scholarship and goes away to college. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Sundown towns by james w loewenApplegate came from Maine, which had been a free state since 1820 and was less hostile to African Americans, making him a more likely advocate of the states African American population than the Missouri-born Burnett. The next summer saw yet another meeting of the legislative committee and a repeal of the Exclusion law, thanks to the advocating of the more fair-minded Jesse Applegate. This was the founding of the Exclusion law or what became known as one of the Black Laws of Oregon. This bill would exclude all African Americans from the territory altogether, under the guise of respecting the status of Oregon as a free state. In the summer of 1844, in the legislative committee for the provisional government of Oregon, Peter Burnett introduced a bill “to prevent slavery”. This is possible foreshadowing of a series of legislative actions in the territory. Throughout the early 1800s, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri, where most of Oregon’s population originated, had all passed laws that restricted the rights of African Americans. Racial attitudes from home states were brought out West to the Oregon territory, right along with a family’s personal belongings. Racial politics that far precede the Civil Rights Movement are evident around the country, as well as in Oregon, despite Oregon having an extremely small black population. For far too long, queer people have been excluded from literature and prevented from telling their own stories in their own way. This also extends South African writers, of course. However, the work of writers such as the late Binyavanga Wainaina and even a contemporary such as Romeo Origun, have endeavored to go further and reconcile what it means to be African and queer against the backdrop where so many having portrayed the two as mutually exclusive identities. The works of writers such as Chinua Achebe, Es'kia Mphahlele, Tsitsi Dangarembga and Buchi Emecheta have undoubtedly produced seminal works which have cast African Literature into the spotlight.ĥ Books by African Writers You Need To Read This Summer In the same way that the voices of Black and African writers have been necessary in revolutionizing the world of literature and pushing back against dominant Eurocentric narratives, it has been equally important to witness the rise in stories that speak to the lives and experiences of queer people. |
